Legend Rare Coin Auctions is honored to offer this GEM 1857 Seated Liberty dollar. Tied with the Akers-Gardner coin we sold in December 2016 for SECOND FINEST GRADED at PCGS, just a single MS65+ (our Legend-Morelan Collection example) is finer. This MAGNIFICENT GEM is fresh to the market, we have not been able to trace it since its sale in the Stack's November 2001 sale of the Cornelius Vermeule Collection. Appearing as lot 462, this coin was described as: "This coin has absolutely spectacular luster and surfaces. The cartwheels are sharp and unbroken on both sides. The fields are smooth, lustrous, and fully satiny. The piece is mostly light silver in color. On the obverse some areas of darker toning near Liberty's head and at the date, with some scattered flecks elsewhere. The reverse is more even silver with attractive pale blue and gold iridescence. Some of the obverse stars (notably those at right) are soft, as is Liberty's hair. Her face is sharp however, and there are full details visible in her gown. This is a really pleasing specimen, one worthy of close inspection." We really cannot add much to that description, except to say that between Legend Numismatics and LRCA, we have handled many spectacular Seated Liberty dollars (including the all time finest Bruce Morelan Collection), and this 1857 silver dollar is truly AMAZING, not just in its technical grade, but in terms of its eye appeal. This is a marvel of numismatic survival and once you look at it, you will fall in love for sure! PCGS 2, NGC 0, CAC 3. The aforementioned Akers-Gardner coin sold for $73,438 in our December 2016 Regency Auction. Over six years later, the market is stronger for sure. The current Collectors Universe value is $85,000. With the sole finer MS65+ off the market in a major collection, we have zero doubt that this AMAZING GEM will bring a very strong bid and will be the FINEST available for a long time to come.
