- 1976 Eisenhower Dollar. Type II Reverse. MS-67 (PCGS).
Lovely golden-olive, orange-apricot and powder blue iridescence is seen on both sides of this Superb Gem. Fully lustrous and exceptionally smooth for the type, this impressive condition rarity would do justice to the finest Eisenhower dollar set. The reverse of this popular Bicentennial issue was designed by Dennis R. Williams, at that time a 21-year old junior at the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio. Majoring in sculpture, Williams entered the National Bicentennial Coin Design Competition as a design problem assigned by his college instructor. The purpose of the Competition, proposed by the Treasury Department, was to ensure that the designs of the nation's Bicentennial coinage were accomplished by U.S. citizens outside of those on the Mint staff.
With a much higher mintage of 113,318,000 vs. 4,019,000 circulation strikes, the 1976 Type II Reverse is more available in Mint State than its Type I Reverse counterpart. In keeping with the standards of the Eisenhower dollar series, however, the Type II Reverse is conditionally challenging with relatively few examples warranting a premium Gem grade. In Superb Gem MS-67, as here, this issue is rare.
