TIED FOR FINEST GRADED, This 1872 Shield nickel is a real prize for the Registry Set crowd, especially the collector who demands POP TOP coins for their sets! Bold and lustrous surfaces show light iridescent toning in the fields on both sides. The devices are razor sharp and struck from cracked dies. A strong glass and careful inspection reveals a few stray lines, which is likely why CAC did not bean this SUPERB GEM, however the naked eye appearance is unimpacted. While over six million were struck for circulation, collectors clearly opted for the Proof issue, as few survive in very high grade. PCGS 2, NGC 2. Prior to this coin selling in 2022 for $11,163, the most recent example sold for $10,575 in the 2017 FUN auction.
