- Impressive Quality for the Issue GREAT BRITAIN. George IV Coronation Gold Medal, 1821. London Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-63 Gold Shield. BHM-1070; Eimer-1146a. By B. Pistrucci. Obverse: GEORGIUS IIII D G BRITANNIARUM REX F D, laureate head left; Reverse: PROPRIO JAM JURE ANIMO PATERNO, George seated left on throne, being crowned by Victory to right; to left, Britannia, Hibernia, and Scotia standing right; in exergue in three lines, INAUGURATUS / DIE JULII XIX / ANNO MDCCCXXI. Exceptionally brilliant and dazzling, with a high degree of radiance, this coronation type commemorates the beginning of what would be one of two shorter reigns--the other being that of William Iv--between the lengthy reigns of George III and Victoria. On this type, Pistrucci's elegant yet powerful style is on full display, such as the soft fullness in George's facial features as well as the sculpted--almost stylized--ruffled hair of the monarch.
