GERMANY. Besancon. Taler, 1661. NGC VF-35. Dav-5070; KM-48. Located near the Swiss border and today a part of France, Besancon has played a pivotal role in many invasions and conquests over the centuries and has been alternately French, German, Austrian (Habsburg), and a free-city under Phillip II of Spain. Their right to strike coins ended a few years after this piece was struck in 1673, with all coins bearing the inscription CAROLVS QVINTA for Charles V, though he had abdicated more than a century earlier. Considering the area's eclectic history, a terrific issue, fully fit for the collector that prefers coins with stories. Estimate: $200 - $400.
