- 1878 Twenty-Cent Piece. Proof-66 Cameo (PCGS). CAC. An impressive cameo proof from the final year of this short-lived denomination, a proof-only issue that saw a production run of just 600 pieces; no doubt many of those have succumbed to the ages. Brilliant at the centers with frosty motifs and with deep mirror fields that display rich gold and neon blue at the obverse periphery -- the reverse is alive with classic bull's eye toning that moves outward from the brilliant center through concentric rings of bold gold, orange, crimson, and deep electric blue. The strike is nothing short of magnificent, and the eye appeal is easily equal to the task of the assigned grade. Another beauty from the Teich Family Collection, a coin that has resided in the family's cabinet for more than 50 years, and a piece that represents a ""fresh"" opportunity of the sort that fires today's numismatic auction marketplace.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
Ever since I began dealing in numismatics, in 1953, I have appreciated the elusive quality of proof twenty-cent pieces in general, and truly Gem 1877 and 1878 dates in particular. For some reason both of these issues, each struck only in proof format, often come lightly polished or with extensive hairlines. This is not as true of the first two dates, 1875 and 1876. The Teich family members were connoisseurs, and this elegant 1878 is a poster example of quality and rarity combined.
