- 1842 Braided Hair Cent. N-1. Rarity-7- as a Proof. Small Date. Proof-64 BN (PCGS).
Incredibly rich dark chocolate brown on both sides with strong mirrors in the fields. Light golden-olive outlines the obverse design features and there are faint blue-steel overtones. The reverse is very similar but benefits from bolder mottled blue and violet accents through the center. Sharp and very attractive upon first impression, though closer study reveals some abrasions on the obverse rim over stars 9 through 13, while a series of related small nicks extend between the final two stars to the base of the bust. Struck by the same reverse die used to produce the Proof-only 1841 N-1.
As noted in our offering of the finer Twin Leaf coin in July of 2015 (lot 2349), this is the only 1842 Newcomb number for which Proofs are confirmed. Walter Breen considered a few Large Date examples (N-3) to be Proofs, but those have since been discredited as coins struck from later state lapped dies that have fresh-looking prooflike fields. This is one of about 10 different specimens identified by Denis Loring in his Proof cent research.
PCGS# 397596.
PCGS Population: 4; 2 finer in this category (Proof-66 BN finest).
Provenance: Ex unknown source in England; Roy E. Naftzger, Jr.; Eric Streiner; Denis Loring, 1994; our sale of the Twin Leaf Collection of United States Large Cents, Part II, March 2016, lot 11011.
