- 1721-B French Colonies Sou, or 9 Deniers. Rouen Mint. W-11825. VF-20 (PCGS).
83.8 grains. Beautiful light brown with smooth surfaces. Unbelievable surface quality for this issue, that tends to come dark and granular when it appears at all. The planchet is of superb quality, with just a tiny flaw at the rim at 3 o'clock on the obverse and 3 o'clock on the reverse. A little soft at reverse periphery from 9 o'clock to 12 o'clock, else the legends and devices are sharp and complete. Magnified scrutiny reveals scattered tiny contact points and minor hairlines here and there, including a short hairline scratch inside the obverse rim at 5 o'clock, but none attract the naked eye. A natural low spot is present high above OL of COLONIES on the obverse. Craige had trouble assigning this an attribution number in his scheme, noting "FRANCOIS side diff. See F of 2B. Otherwise same as 2B." Exceptional eye appeal for the issue. Offered on its own, this would be a conversation starter and one of the best 1721-Bs sold for an extended period of years or decades! Provenance: From the Ted L. Craige Collection. Purchased from John J. Ford, Jr. on January 16, 1969. Earlier from Jacques Schulman, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. A Schulman flip with Ford's cost code in his hand accompanies this lot.
