A gorgeous B-1, the only die pair that was used to strike all 89,235 quarters in 1815, the only mintage of this denomination struck from 1807 to 1818. The entire mintage was delivered on December 12, 1815 and January 10, 1816; struck for the Planters Bank in New Orleans and probably the Bank of the United States in Philadelphia. While one of the original denominations authorized by the 1792 Coinage Act. However, due to large quantities of Spanish colonial 2 Reales, which were legal tender until 1857, filled the void and satisfied demand in commercial channels. Quarters would not be struck on a regular basis until the 1830s. This is a gorgeous GEM survivor of this important first year of type. Steely- silver with russet-tan-gold-and pale blue iridescent tones come to vivid life when the light catches the rich satiny luster below. Only the slightest of light lines hold back this PQ GEM from an even higher grade. The eye appeal is sensational, to say SUPERB doesn't quite relay the message! PCGS 4, NGC 7, CAC 3. This coin sold in our May 2016 Regency Auction XVII, realizing $32,900, and the one before that was sold in August 2011 for $41,400. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $40,000 and this date is VERY RARE any finer; PCGS has graded just five finer, the finest a 66+, and the last MS66 to sell was the Hayes-Pogue coin, which brought just shy of $97,000 in May 2015. With no PCGS-graded GEMS selling in more than five years, there is much pent up demand for a coin of this status. Good luck, bidding will be fierce! Cert. Number 25214948 PCGS # 5321.00
