- 1793 Chain Cent. S-4. Rarity-3+. Noyes Die State A. AMERICA. Periods. VF-20 Environmental Damage. The color is pleasing with a deep chocolate brown throughout but there are shallow pits on the reverse which are old and toned over. On the obverse we note a thin scratch crossing Liberty's neck into the right field and a few other minor marks that blend into the surfaces. As to the rims there are reasonably clean with a few shallow nicks, but the overall presentation is more than acceptable for this rare and desirable first issue of Large cents. Of course the shallow obverse head on Liberty with the chain style reverse was met with disdain by enough of the powers that be that a design change was soon ordered up at the Philadelphia Mint, nothing like stumbling right out of the gate in 1793. Nevertheless, these enigmatic coins represent one of our county's first issues from the new Philadelphia Mint and have always been highly prized by collectors. PCGS# 1341.
