- M. Diatom Collection. The Minute Hall Collection. Bass-Dannreuther 2, R.4+ is the second and rarer of only two die-marriages for 1812 that share a single obverse die. The easiest way to distinguish between the two is to look at the "D" in the denomination and note that it rests well left of the end of the stem above, while on BD-1, it is positioned about half way underneath the same stem. Population reports validate the relative scarcity, as over a handful of known Gem survivors for BD-1 have appeared in auction records, while the present BD-2 may have but a couple of Gem representatives in existence. For sure, the seemingly "plentiful" supply of all 1812s in MS-62 and above must be significantly inflated by resubmissions and crossovers, even given the reported mintage of nearly sixty-thousand pieces. The obverse die brought up nearly all of the finest details for the design, although a number of segments along the border between 10:00 and 12:00 are nearly missing due to adjustment marks, fortuitously isolated at the edge. A couple more appear on the bust, but none impede the primary focal areas, and the reverse shows an excellent strike as well, with no adjustment marks. Interestingly, the weight correction must have been rather ham-handed, because the thinning of that edge of the planchet (from the obverse filing) did cause a hint of softness in the corresponding denticles on the reverse between 6:00 and 8:00. A beautifully lustrous example with really only one luster graze on the reverse, in the upper field, the grade seems to be accurately pronounced by the presence of some light disturbances in the obverse left field (scotia).
