- Despite a large Proof mintage of nearly 3,800 pieces, the 1885 is quite elusive in the RED designation. Indeed, just 14 have graded PR66 RD or finer at PCGS after 33 years of grading coins, inclusive of duplicates. Fully red, with good quality mirrors that have a bold flash. The devices stand out against the smoothness of the fields. A tiny planchet flake by the shield on the reverse, but this has no effect on the grade. Double endorsed by CAC and the Eagle Eye photo seal. PCGS 9, NGC 3, CAC 1. NO CAC approved example has ever sold in auction; the last PCGS-graded coin sold in March 2017 for $2,350, making the CAC CPG value of $1,750 and the current PCGS value of $2,150 seem too low! Cert.
