- 1835 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-102. Rarity-3. MS-65+ (NGC).
Splendid surfaces are silky smooth in texture with a lively satin finish beneath iridescent reddish-apricot and, at the borders, cobalt blue toning. Fully struck in virtually all areas, this is an exceptionally well produced and preserved coin in a late date Capped Bust, Lettered Edge half dollar. As a rule, survivors of this issue, while plentiful in an absolute sense, are challenging to locate with solid technical quality and strong eye appeal. Even most Mint State survivors are poorly defined with subdued and/or heavily abraded surfaces. Not so the present Gem, which ranks as Condition Census #1 for the 1835 O-102 dies per the listing in Stephen J. Herrman's Autumn 2017 revision to Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars: 1794-1836.
Provenance: From Heritage's ANA Signature Auction of August 2014, lot 4420.
NGC Census (all die marriages of the issue): 1; 7 finer (MS-67 * finest).
PCGS# 6168.
