A very eye appealing 1852-D half eagle! Offering a bold eye appeal, this date, while available in lower grades with some frequency, in AU58 and higher grades, this date is quite rare. Indeed, the mintage was sizeable with over 91,000 struck, but these circulated widely in pre-Civil War southern commercial channels and the average survivor is apt to be in the VF-AU50 range. Showing just the lightest hint of friction on the high points and in the fields, the surfaces are generally devoid of anything more than the slightest tiny traces of contact in the obverse fields. The strike is above average with decent definition to Liberty's hair curls and eagle's feathers, but the typical peripheral weakness is seen at the obverse rims. Rich honey-wheat gold color with lovely original olive accents adds to the lovely eye appeal, the present AU58 is very high end for the grade. PCGS 18, NGC 40, CAC 10. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $10,000 and the most recent AU58 to sell was a non-CAC PCGS-graded coin that brought $8,700 in May 2022. RARE in Mint State, this is a highly collectible piece of southern gold that will delight any collector. We expect strong bidding. Cert. Number 6056111002 PCGS # 8252
