- 1855-C Gold Dollar. Type II. Winter Variety 1 (9-K), the only known dies. AU-50 (PCGS). Sharp for the date in terms of the strike, with more definition on Liberty and the wreath than commonly seen. A meager mintage of 9,803 pieces were struck that year, precious few survived to today, two or three percent of that number given the ravages of that particular time were rather extreme. From those that remain they tell a story of worn dies, often with blunt striking characteristics, and worn dentils. Clashing evidence is strong, with the wreath present through the obverse fields, also areas where the coiner smoothed out the ribbon and left a small golden hill on the struck coins between S OF. Pleasing orange-gold color and the planchet is reasonably nice as well with minimal surface porosity common this year and issue. A solid representative for the collector who needs this date and mint, and of course these were struck during the short-lived Type 2 period for the gold dollar series.
