What a great looking first year of issue for the San Francisco mint Morgan dollar. This SUPERB coin has a razor sharp strike, imparting a rich frost on the devices and the surfaces have a blazing mint brilliance. The obverse is essentially blast white silver with a strong radiance. A band of rainbow toning that covers about 10% of the upper portion of the reverse gives this beauty an excellent look. Unlike the San Francisco Mint issues of 1879-1882, very few examples of the original mintage of 9,774,000, survive in such a lofty state of preservation. PCGS 36, NGC 32. The most recent example brought $7,800 in the 2020 FUN auction, and the RanJack coin sold in our July 2018 auction for $7,931. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $10,000, and there are just four coins graded higher, only one of which, an MS68, has sold. realizing nearly $36,000 in the 2009 FUN auction! This is a great looking 78-S dollar worthy of a great Morgan dollar set. Good luck! Cert. Number 25693273 PCGS # 7082.00
