JR-2. For 1831 across all varieties, NGC has certified 2 MS-64 PL, zero higher (and only one other prooflike, an MS-63 PL). The cataloger has not seen all of these examples, but the other known MS-64 PL happens to be JR-2 as well, and interestingly, it was struck from a completely different die-state (much earlier) than this clashed example. Attribution begins on the reverse, where the left end of the motto lines up with the gap between "ED", while on the obverse, the down-left point of the first star points directly to the end of Liberty's bust. It is easy to surmise that the coin is prooflike because it was struck off of freshly polished dies, with the hope of removing some of the many clash marks that still remain. Highly noticeable is some corruption of the outlines of each of the digits in the date, around which letters in STATES left odd impressions.
