- 1872-CC Liberty Half Eagle. EF-45 (PCGS). CAC. Secure Holder. Satin smooth wear and free of the usual heavy bagmarks or nicks that are so commonly seen on these early Carson City half eagles. Toned with classic coppery-gold accents around the devices, with orange to yellow-gold elsewhere. A tiny mintage of 6,980 pieces leaves most collectors searching, as there simply are not enough to go around. In high collector grades as seen here, there is immense demand. Slightly more than 100 examples are believed to exist today in all grades, and one can imagine just how hard it would be to find a more eye appealing example.
Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
The 1872-CC half eagle is a rarity at any level. Rusty Goe, who has studied the series extensively, estimates that only 100 to 125 exist, all of which show circulation except perhaps one to three that qualify for Mint State (facts are scarce, grading opinions vary, and certification events can be multiple for a single coin). No matter how viewed, here indeed is a find for the half eagle or Carson City Mint specialist.
