- MEXICO. War of Independence. Zacatecas. 2 Reales, 1811. Ferdinand VII. PCGS Genuine--Damage, Fine Details.
KM-186; Cal-type 243 # 996. Date inverted variety. Always popular L.V.O. issue made with "Local" arms where pomegranates are in place of castles. Seldom seen at auction and RARE as such. Well circulated with some noted damage, however given the local struggles going on at the time, it is quite a lovely survivor.
Some discussion around this issue being possible struck by insurgents in Zacatecas has begun recently. In October of 1810, the Royalist left Zacatecas and took 250,000 coins and 3 Million in silver bars. The insurgents immediately ask the mint in Mexico City to mint coins locally as a result. The L.V.O. issue was then designed by Manuel Rojas, thought to be a local metal working and clock maker. It seems the early issues were made with pomegranates and an off-center legend (starting at 9 o'clock). In 1814, Yrrisorri reported that 171,000 of these were struck between November 1810 and February 1811.
Once the city was retaken by Royalists, they interestingly had Manuel Rojas correct the dies he originally made, using the traditional castle and lions motif and moving the legends to 12 o'clock. There was brief two week period, April 15 to May 1, where the insurgents retook the city again, however they continued to use the corrected Royalists dies.
Estimate: $150 - $300.
