- 1793 Chain. S-3. Rarity-3- AMERICA, No Periods. VF-20 (PCGS). The Large Cent and Half Cent share the distinction of being the first coins struck under authority of the United States government. The initial examples of each were delivered in 1793, the Cent actually employing three different designs that year. The first of these, Henry Voigt’s Chain Cent, was produced to the extent of 36,103 pieces. As a historically significant, one-year type, the Chain Cent has long enjoyed a strong following among both early Copper specialists and more generalized type collectors. We suspect that this VF survivor will see bidder competition that it as lively and animated as that which has surrounded all of the other Chain Cents to pass through the hands of Bowers and Merena.
Medium-brown surfaces are evenly toned over both sides. There is plenty of bold definition remaining to the major design elements, as well as some sharper detail in the most protected areas. A series of relatively small surface marks are peppered in the obverse field, and there are a few rim disturbances at the upper reverse. We stress, however, that these features are well within the context of the assigned grade, particularly for an early U.S. Copper coin of this size. Accuracy also compels us to mention some old, inactive verdi¬ gris in a few of the recesses around the peripheral lettering—again, a feature that does not really concern us for the grade. All-in-all, a well-balanced example, and a rare coin that is sure to find many willing buyers in todays Market.
