- Starting in 1853, the mint began experimenting with reducing the weight of the cumbersome large cents struck since 1793. Various pattern issues were struck until 1856 when the mint settled on Longacre's flying eagle design. The J-168 is a sort of transitional issue, showing the eagle in flight on the obverse and an olive wreath on the reverse. Struck in bronze with a plain edge, this pattern is rated R-4. Among the finest RB examples graded, only two are finer. Totally original patina delights the eye with rich red undertones and streaks of violet-brown overlay with hints of olive and tan. Exceptionally well struck with complete definition on both sides. The eye appeal is wonderful! PCGS 19, NGC 2, CAC 3. The most recent PCGS/CAC example to sell in auction was in our July 2013 Regency Auction where it realized $3,450 and the current PCGS value is $4,200. There are only two graded finer in the RB designation at PCGS, both PR65 (the most recent of which sold for $6,756 in March 2017. What a cool pattern issue to "get your feet wet" with, or expand on a collection of Flying Eagle cents! Cert. Number 81207854 PCGS # 11721
