- Undated (1860) Bell Portrait / White House. Fuld-509/510A f. Rarity-9. Silver. 22 mm. MS-63 (NGC).
Bust left of candidate John Bell for president with legends surrounding, reverse of the PRESIDENTS HOUSE. Satiny, smooth surfaces display attractive gunmetal gray and silver toning on both sides. On May 9, 1860, at Baltimore the Constitutional Union Party consisting of Southern conservatives, held their convention and elected John Bell to be their candidate over Sam Houston of Texas. Other factions were pressing for their candidates; the political process of 1860 had begun to reflect the tearing apart of the nation. In the end, the parties ended up with Lincoln vs. Douglas for the election.
Provenance: From the Q. David Bowers Collection. Earlier from our sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XXIII, August 2013 ANA, lot 21637. Lot tag and collector envelope with attribution notation included.
