- Impressive T. Brimelow Store Card
Struck over an 1859 Cent
Circa 1863 T. Brimelow Civil War store card struck over an 1859 Indian Cent. Musante GW-668, Baker-519C, Fuld NY630K-5do. Rarity-9. Copper-Nickel. MS-66 (PCGS).
22.0 mm. A rare and very desirable variant for any Civil War-era token. This piece is superbly preserved, well struck and very attractive. The token issue is fairly well centered on the host and struck nicely enough that the central details are well developed, yet plentiful artifacts of the host coin remain. The date, 1859, is clearly visible right over Washington’s forehead. Much of the obverse legend, the feather tips and even part of LIBERTY from the Indian’s headband are discernible. On the reverse, ONE CENT is plainly visible at the center. Highly lustrous with a soft rose tone on the obverse, the reverse is a bit brighter and almost light silver gray in tone. We have sold one other overstruck piece similar to this. That example appeared in two of our sales in the last decade, and is struck over an 1857 Flying Eagle cent. This one is much better made and far more attractive. Extremely rare and a true numismatic delicacy.
Provenance: Ex William Spohn Baker Collection, to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania by bequest, November 15, 1897.
