1897-S Barber Half Dollar. MS-63 (PCGS). Gold Shield Holder. Expertly produced with needle sharp definition throughout the design, this lovely piece also sports full mint luster in a lively satin texture. Virtually brilliant with eye appeal that, alone, would easily support an even higher grade. In a series replete with scarce and conditionally challenging issues, the 1897-S stands out due to a limited mintage of 933,900 pieces. As an early date Barber half dollar from the San Francisco Mint, this issue suffered a particularly high rate of attrition through circulation. Mint State survivors such as this are scarce in an absolute sense and become increasingly rarer the closer one comes to the Gem level of preservation. PCGS# 6479. NGC ID: 24M2.
