- FROM THE TRZASKA COLLECTION This is the RAREST and most enigmatic issue in the Shield nickel series. Not only is this coin the highlight of the Trzaska Collection, but it is also a highlight of this entire Regency Auction. The mint changed the design of the Shield nickel reverse part way through 1867. Difficulties in striking caused the With Rays reverse die to break, leaving many small die cracks. The mint sought to fix this issue by removing the rays from the design. A small, but unknown mintage in Proof was produced. Some estimates are as low as 25; PCGS CoinFacts suggests 60; the current combined population of PCGS and NGC-graded coins comes to 88 examples (which likely includes duplication). Regardless of actual mintage, the number of known examples is very small. This gorgeously toned example sets itself apart from all the others. Often coming with dull mirrors, this one has a great flash and beaming reflectivity. Stunning rainbow iridescent toning can be seen framing both sides, attesting to its originality and very high end eye appeal. Shades of red, green, blue, and gold blend to create a vibrancy of color that is rarely seen on any 1867 Rays in Proof. A classic rarity that is always in demand from collectors, this coin is eagerly sought by advanced collectors. PCGS 16, NGC 4, CAC 8. This is the only PR64+ graded and it brought $31,200 in March 2018. The current Collectors Universe value is $36,000. A high end coin for any high end set. This one will see very strong bidding for sure. Cert. Number 36716709 PCGS # 003818
