- 1865 Liberty Quarter Eagle. AU-58 (PCGS). At just 1,520 business strikes produced, the 1865 boasts one of the lowest mintage figures in the long-lived Liberty Quarter Eagle series of 1840-1907. With gold specie payments still suspended in the Eastern United States as the Civil War drew to a close, little bullion reached the Philadelphia Mint that year for coinage into new Quarter Eagles. The 1865 is an important and underrated rarity in all grades, and it is more challenging to collect than many of the more widely recognized low-mintage Quarter Eagles from the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mints.<br /> The 1865 is not only an important absolute rarity, but it is a major condition rarity with a single PCGS MS-63 representing the total Mint State population of this issue at the major certification services. You can imagine our delight, therefore, at being able to offer this Condition Census near-Mint survivor for the consideration of our gold bidders. A highlight of the extensive Horseshoe Collection, this piece is fully struck with vibrant, nearly complete, prooflike luster. Awash in rich reddish-rose color, with no significant blemishes apart from a few wispy hairlines and other tiny handling marks. The hairlines, in particular, might explain why this coin did not attain a Mint State rating as the surfaces appear to be free of wear and other signs of actual circulation.
