- 1785 Vermont Copper. Landscape. RR-2, Bressett 1-A, W-2005. Rarity-3. Late Die State. VERMONTS. Fine-12.
120.3 grains. Faintly microporous chocolate-brown throughout. Natural obverse planchet flaw from rim at 11 o'clock to a point above the center of the mountains, another lighter fissure from C upward to the sun face, VER present, other letters weak and obscured on viewer's left, advanced obverse die state, large wedge-like crack from 8 in date upward nearly to bottom of mountain and analogous to the middle state pictured in Carlotto, reverse weak peripherally, just TELLA QUA visible, natural fissure from rim into the rays, some other tiny fissures here and there, all-seeing eye details bold for the grade, as are most of the rays. From Carlotto's "heavy group" of Ryder-2 examples, a range that runs from 115 to 130 grains. A little rough in spots but still a decent coin that would make a fine entry-level piece for a new collector to the series.
PCGS# 539.
Provenance: From the Dan Freidus Collection. Earlier from the C4 Scott Barnes Sale, October 12, 1996, lot 442. Lot tag and paper envelope with attribution notes included.
