- 1722-H French Colonies Sou, or 9 Deniers. La Rochelle Mint. W-11840. Fine-12. 95.1 grains. Mostly medium brown, but pits render the final date digit obscured. The reverse is quite sharp, though some scattered pitting is also visible there. Though the coin may best be described as typical for the series, this coin's desirability is increased by an accompanying envelope that connects it with an impressive provenance. The envelope is stamped HALL COLLECTION, the Dr. Thomas Hall Collection, sold en bloc to Virgil Brand in 1909. On the back of the envelope is a date stamp for "Nov. 4 1932 BGJ," for Burdette G. Johnson, the liquidator of the Col. Green estate. The price is marked at 75¢. "Col. Green" is lightly inscribed in pencil on the front of the envelope. Not a superb coin, but with the best imaginable provenance! PCGS# 158629. Provenance: From the Ted L. Craige Collection. Earlier from the Hall, Brand, and Green collections.
