- THE SAN DIEGO COLLECTION A very pleasing GEM example of this variety, which is not just one of the FINEST KNOWN of the die marriage, but also ranks among the best for the DATE. Half dollars from 1823 are much more challenging in GEM than other similar dates in the series. A vibrant mint luster glows below a dusting of icy teal blue, soft gold, and pewter-rose tones. The colors really do come to life as the swirling cartwheels really hit the light. Generally well struck up from a late die state, with a bold die crack that starts at the stand of the 1 in the date, curving up the bustline, through stars 1-5, before bending out to the rim on the obverse and a pair of reverse die cracks that encircle that entire side. The eye appeal is very nice and the technical quality stands out boldly. Ex Heritage, June 2014, lot 4516 (as PCGS MS64 CAC); purchased privately by our consignor. PCGS 8, NGC 7. There is a wide range of APRs, but it should be noted this coin sold for $11,163 as a PCGS MS64 CAC in June 2014. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $11,500 and there are just five finer at PCGS, MS66 finest, one of which we sold as part of the Dale Friend Collection in May 2022 for $70,500. This GEM is a delight to behold and has a very familiar look that will entice strong bidding. Cert. Number 46263205 PCGS # 39617
