- 1942 Experimental Cent. Judd-2060, Pollock-Unlisted, RB 42-58 Third Reverse. Rarity-7-. Injection Molded Cellulose Acetate (Tenite I), Brown. Plain Edge. Specimen-63 (PCGS).
18.5 mm, 1.3 mm thick. 6.5 grains. Obv:Bust of Columbia faces right, the portrait borrowed from the Colombian 2 centavo coin. The periphery is inscribed LIBERTY / JUSTICE with the date 1942 below. Rev:A simple wreath surrounds the inscription UNITED / STATES / MINT, the wreath copied from the Baker-155 Washington medalet. A second example of this type, the reverse free of test marks, yet with an overall "fuzzy" appearance to the details on that side. The obverse is sharply rendered with test marks in the left and right fields. The "metallic sparkle" (as described by Burdette, 2012) to the surfaces is consistent with metal particles. Made by Tennessee Eastman Corp., and obviously among the pieces sent to the National Bureau of Standards for testing.
Provenance: From the Bob Heisley Collection. Purchased privately from Jeff Kierstead Rare Coins, late 1990s.
