- 1809 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-107. Rarity-2. IIIII Edge. MS-62 (PCGS). Brilliant apart from blushes of reddish-gold iridescence here and there around the peripheries, this lively example allows full appreciation of intense mint frost. Most areas show razor sharp to full striking detail, the only mentionable softness confined to the top of Liberty's cap and the opposing area on the reverse. There are no significant marks at the assigned grade level. This is an important survivor from the 1809 O-107 dies that just qualifies for Condition Census per Stephen J. Herrman in the Spring 2022 revision to Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars: 1794-1839. The variety is readily identified by wide spacing of the 18 in the date and a rough die lump to the left of the C. on the reverse. With the III Edge variety adding further desirability, this flashy example is sure to see spirited bidding among collectors specializing in this popular 19th century half dollar series. PCGS# 6094.
