- J.H. Collection. 26 graded MS-65, 4 higher at PCGS. That a single consignor provide the prior premium-quality "very choice" and "strong very choice" key examples is remarkable in itself. Yet here we are with a third, and it is an utterly amazing example, replete with vintage gold color, matte luster and clean surfaces uninhibited by defects of any kind. Even if this were a common date example, any collector would be thrilled with the stand-alone quality.
Thinking back over the 1911-D quarter-eagles that the cataloger has been privileged to describe, none stands out as having finer details than this "gem". Notwithstanding the blatantly strong "D", other areas sometimes missed by the dies include the eagle's shoulder ,the top of the obscured wing, and the row segmentation of the right (observed) talon. All of these areas are exquisitely detailed here. Turning to the obverse, the second feather from the bottom will sometimes miss out on delineation between barbs above the rachis, towards the end, but again, there is not even isolated weakness seen here. The surface exhibits pleasing medium gold hue of ideal saturation, and of course, no distracting contact marks on either side.
