- 1867 Libertas Americana / J.A. Bolen Store Card. Musante JAB-30, Rulau Ma-Sp 42. Brass. MS-64 (PCGS).
25 mm. Generous light golden-brass surface remains in the obverse field while Bolen's portrait and much of the reverse has mellowed to golden-olive. Nicely struck, with inviting reflectivity in the fields that give this piece excellent eye appeal. Nicked in Liberty's hair, which will only be seen under close inspection, while a small spot on the obverse rim can be easily forgiven considering the overall appearance and rarity of this piece. Bolen reported only a single piece struck in brass, suggesting that this might well be unique. He also reported one struck each in silver and tin, and according to Musante, the American Journal of Numismaticsreported that three were made in each of these metals, though no mention was made of brass. Having seen direct evidence through our offerings in recent sales, we now know that at least three were made in brass, confirming the accuracy of the mintage given in the American Journal of Numismatics. It is worth mentioning that any impressions from these dies in any metal are from Bolen's shop. He sold the Libertas die to Kline in 1872, but he destroyed his own 1867-dated portrait die, so no one else could have produced examples of JAB-30, at any time. An important rarity for the Bolen specialist, once owned by Q. David Bowers, though it did not appear in our January 2011 sale.
Provenance: From the Martin Logies Collection. Earlier ex Q. David Bowers; our sale of the Tim Gabriele Collection, November 2017 Baltimore Auction, lot 244.
