详细说明: GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (ca. 1086-89). Southwark Mint; Lifword, moneyer. William II Rufus. PCGS AU-50. S-1258; N-851. Profile (BMC i) type. Obverse: + PILLELM REX, crowned and draped bust right, holding sword and breaking inner circle; Reverse: + LIFPORD ON SIIÐI, cross pattee, with annulet at center; all over cross fleuree in saltire. Quite deeply toned and exceptionally pleasing, this RARE issue stands as a great survivor of the type. Son of William the conqueror, William II was notable for his red hair and bachelor status. Often displaying an opulent taste, William II had many vices of drink, lust, and gluttony. Despite this, he always maintained a social charm and was ever chivalrous. He maintained order in England and was a successful general of his forces. William II died in 1100 in a “hunting accident” and his brother hastily assumed the throne after his death. Though it is impossible to confirm, it seems likely that this was an act of homicide in order to depose a king. Estimate: $1,500 - $3,000. Provenance: From the Paul C. Runze Collection.
