- 1863 Liberty Seated Half Dime. MS-67 (PCGS).
This frosty little Superb Gem reveals a sharp strike and semi-reflective fields toned in a medium gray overall with dappled golden brown, crimson, and sky blue highlights. The disappearance of silver coinage from circulation in the Eastern and Midwestern states was one of the most significant economic effects of the outbreak of civil war in 1861. By 1863 the Philadelphia Mint was striking only limited quantities of silver coins; the half dime saw only 18,000 circulation strikes produced. Uncirculated survivors are scarce when viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics, especially in the finest Mint State grades, as here. This popular issue is always in demand with Liberty Seated enthusiasts and comes to market rarely in Gem grades.
