- The Picker-Steinberg Noe-1 Oak Tree Shilling
1652 Massachusetts Bay Colony Oak Tree Shilling. Noe-1, W-430. Rarity-3. IN at Left. EF-40 (PCGS).
71.1 grains. An unusually broad, handsome example of this prototypical Oak Tree shilling, described in our 1984 Picker sale as "a common variety, but always a popular type coin because of the sharply cut tree. Struck on a ful planchet with a number of tiny straight edges, as often seen with this variety. Some trivial weakness at the obverse from two to four o'clock, but all else is sharp and clear. An excellent type piece with no marks or scratches. Even dark gray coloration." We will note some trivial natural roughness at 12 o'clock and 3 o'clock on the reverse periphery, but this remains an especially choice example of one of the most high style of the Oak Tree shillings. That Richard Picker, a connoisseur of Massachusetts silver, included this example in his own collection (after handling perhaps dozens of them) speaks to its visual appeal and quality.
PCGS# 45361.
Provenance: From the John "Jack" Royse Collection. Earlier from our (Stack's) sale of the Richard Picker Collection, October 1984, lot 4; and from our (Stack's) sale of the Gilbert Steinberg Collection, October 1989, lot 5.
