- PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Mexico. 8 Reales, ND (1834-37). Manila Mint. Isabel II. PCGS AU-53, Countermark: AU Details. KM-Unlisted; Basso-56; PNM#6-Unlisted; PNM#16-315; PNM#21-VIII-126; Cacho-IX-CS-042; Gil-5-4-1-II. Type VI countermark; crowned Y.II. within circular indent. Issued by decree of 20 December 1834, suppressed 31 March 1837 (By Decree of 1 February 1836). Countermark applied to the obverse of a 1833-Do RM/L Mexico Republic 8 Reales, clean date. A SCARCEdate from this popular mint, we have only six examples documented. The countermark is boldly applied to a beautifully preserved host coin displaying light attractive mottled patina. Much remaining luster on the obverse pops out when rotating in the light, while the luster on the reverse is subdued and a bit flat. Minor earthen deposits are noticed amongst the devices adding to its originality and pleasing appearance. Vastly superior than normally encountered for this type with much remaining detail of the host that is sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters. Estimate: $3,000 - $4,000.
