- THE BIG CYPRESS COLLECTION The Crosslet 4 variety of the 1834 Classic Head half eagle is represented by a single die marriage, HM-9, of which Daryl Haynor, the author of that work, suggests about 160 examples survive in all grades, and the rarity of Mint State examples is legendary, making most collectors seek out attractive AU examples. The Big Cypress Collection coin offered here is a very attractive example for the assigned AU55 grade. Only a trace of wear is seen as high point friction and minor contact in the fields. Accents of original luster cling to the fields, highlighting a deep tangerine-honey gold color. The details are crisp and sharp with complete hair and feather definition. A strong glass reveals some minor lines, but these have no impact for the unaided eye. The visual quality is excellent. PCGS 15, NGC 25. No PCGS AU55 has sold in auction since September 2018. In fact the only AU grade coin sold since 2020 in a PCGS holder was a PCGS AU50 CAC in February 2021.
