This is seemingly a very fresh coin, accompanied by an old Sotheby's London envelope. A borderline CHOICE example with a thick, frosty luster. Medium gold is imbued with hints of gold and deeper amber hues. Some stray lines are noted and account for the assigned grade, but there are no serious marks or anything to distract the eye appeal. Only 7,036 $3 gold pieces were struck for commerce in this Antebellum year, and as expected for such a low mintage, this date is RARE in Mint State, with PCGS CoinFacts estimating that only around 140 examples survive in all Mint State grades.
PCGS 37, NGC 15. The last one to sell brought $9,000 in April 2022 and even a PCGS/CAC MS61 sold for $7,344 in our February 2023. The PCGS Price Guide value is $10,000 and this date is very challenging finer. Worthy of a fine collection of $3 gold pieces.
