- Exceedingly Rare BG-703A Octagonal 25 Cents
Rarity-7+ or Rarity-8
1856 Octagonal 25 Cents. BG-703A. Rarity-7+. Liberty Head. MS-64 (PCGS).
Here is a legendary rarity in the California small denomination gold series. Solid Choice Mint State quality, this lovely coin exhibits a smooth satin texture on both sides. Boldly defined by the standards of the die pairing, with warm honey-gold patina and a silky smooth texture.
This variety, produced by Frontier, Deviercy & Co. and formerly attributed as BG-107A or BG-704A, combines the obverse of BG-703 with the reverse of BG-107. It was discovered by Rick Bagg, along with Stuart Levine, when both were employed by Ed Leventhal at J.J. Teaparty in Boston, Massachusetts. It was first announced in a Coin Worldarticle in the August 8, 1984 issue (p. 18). Seemingly found unattributed in a group purchased by J.J. Teaparty in 1984, this discovery coin has passed through several prominent collections.
As of this writing, we have confirmed the following coins as distinct examples of BG-703A:
1 - PCGS MS-64.Ex Oregon Collection. The present example.
2 - PCGS MS-64.Ex Jay Roe; Superior's sale of the Kenneth W. Lee Collection, September 1988, lot 115; Superior's Jascha Heifetz Collection sale, October 1989, lot 114; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Texas Collection, January 1992, lot 4007 (as BG-107A); Jay Roe; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Jay Roe Collection, September 2003, lot 144. The discovery coin, and also the plate coin for the variety in the 2003 edition of the Breen-Gillio reference California Pioneer Fractional Gold.
3 - PCGS MS-63.Ex Heritage FUN Signature Auction of January 2015, lot 7870.
4 - NCS Unc Details.Ex Heritage's sale of the Hamous Collection of California Gold, September 2008 Long Beach Signature Sale, lot 11240; Heritage's Summer FUN Signature Auction of July 2007, lot 3340. Readily identifiable by a concentration of scratches at the right reverse border, likely the result of tooling to efface the diagnostic planchet pit (as made) in that area.
A PCGS MS-63 example that appeared in the May 24, 1993 edition of Coin Worldmight be a duplicate of example #1 or #3 above. Although this variety has traditionally been cataloged as Rarity-8, the confirmation of four pieces explains our Rarity-7+ in this sale. Still a formidable rarity, of course, and a significant bidding opportunity for the advanced collector that is not likely to be repeated in the near future.
Our emission sequence for this series, based on examination of each of the following varieties in the Jay Roe Collection in 2003, is as follows: BG-107, BG-704, BG-703A, BG-703, BG-701, BG-702, BG-706, BG-705, BG-707. This sequence confirms that the BG-703A variety was produced in 1859, not 1856 as the coins are dated.
Provenance: From the Oregon Collection.
PCGS Population: 3; 0 finer. Inasmuch as PCGS reports a total of five grading events for this issue, all either MS-63 or MS-64, it is obvious that these figures are artificially swelled by resubmissions.
