- 1792 Half Disme. Judd-7, Pollock-7. Rarity-4. VF-25 (PCGS). CAC. OGH. Silver. Diagonally reeded edge. Die alignment 360 degrees, or medal turn. Choice and appealing for the grade with excellent overall eye appeal. Deep gunmetal blue fields enhance lighter golden gray high points. The in-hand appearance is nothing short of splendid and low magnification does little to dispel the notion. Eagerly collected for years alongside the earliest coins of the Mint at Philadelphia, and not just by pattern enthusiasts; this issue represents the ""small beginning"" of U.S. coinage mentioned by George Washington in November 1792. It is said that 1,500 1792 half dismes were struck, all from the same dies, those reportedly engraved by William R. Birch of Birch Cent fame. Perhaps 200 to 300 1792 half dismes are known today in all grades, with many of the known pieces with punctures or other problems. The present specimen is undeniably choice in its appearance, physically sound all around, and will be an amply pleasing highlight in the cabinet of its next fortunate steward.
