FROM THE PERFECTION COLLECTION OF CAPPED BUST HALF DOLLARS A sensational, virtually SUPERB O-110 that ranks just below the Eliasberg-Pogue MS67 as the top of the Condition Census for this die pairing (the 5th edition of the Overton reference lists the Census as 67,66,66,65,64). This exceptional 1812 half dollar is very special in every sense of the word! A dynamic satiny mint frost blooms boldly from below a layer of iridescent patina that is deeper at the rims and fades to lighter golden-tinged silver in the centers. Medium teal-blue and olive-gold dominate the deeper toning, with accents of coppery-rose. Another early Capped Bust half dollar in this collection that features all the charm and character that these sometimes crudely made half dollars exude. A light die crack from the rim enters into the lower drapery folds at the tip of Liberty's bust line. This planchet was either unevenly rolled or had a minor clip at about 10:00 on the obverse, as the dentils are not completely struck up, as the blank lacked the metal to flow into the die's recesses. The central devices are exceptionally crisp and very well executed. The dies were slightly rotated and lightly clashed. The surfaces are completely devoid of any contact or flaw of any kind and the quality and eye appeal are ultra high end and SUPERB! PCGS 12, NGC 16, CAC 8. There are three graded MS66+ and just the single aforementioned Eliasberg-Pogue MS67 finer. The other two MS66+ examples sold within the last year or so: an O-105a sold in August 2021 for $45,600 and in our April 2022 Central States Regency Auction 51 offered the Eliasberg O-107 at $42,300. The current Collectors Universe value is listed at $50,000, and it would not shock us if this beautifully toned and awesomely preserved MS66+ brought that or more! Good luck! Cert.
