- 1858 Pattern Indian Cent. Judd-208, Pollock-259. Rarity-1. Copper-Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-65 (PCGS).
Transitional issue. Obv:Longacre's Indian motif as adopted in 1859, here dated 1858, the point of Liberty's bust rounded. Rev: The regular issue design of 1859, with a laurel (or olive -- the Mint used both designations in its correspondence) wreath enclosing the denomination ONE CENT.
Marbled bronze and honey-gold patina adorns the surfaces of this reflective Gem. The devices showcase satiny luster and remain untroubled across the highest points. This die combination is a particularly important transitional issue. As such, it is certainly a candidate for consideration as a historical, "story" item for any collector of regular Indian cents. Only a few hundred are known. It has exactly the same status as an 1856 Flying Eagle cent: regular design one year early. The 1856 is famous, though curiously, the 1858 is not.
Provenance: Ex Bowers and Ruddy Galleries, privately circa 1980.
PCGS Population: 18; 5 finer.
PCGS# 11885. NGC ID: 29BP.
