- Yours Truly Collection. 35 graded MS-65 FB, 36 higher at PCGS. Some coins can be mentioned by date alone, and nearly any collector immediately fills in the rest of the topic of conversation: 1909-S VDB, 1916, 1933, 1895 (did you immediately think Lincoln cent, Standing Liberty quarter, Saint Gaudens double-eagle and Morgan dollar?) ... and 1916-D immediately summons up visions of the widely recognized key to the Mercury dime series. Add to this specific example the "full split bands" designation and one cannot help but recognize the scarcity of this technically exceptional and visually pleasing specimen.
The central bands on the reverse are struck as broadly and well split as one will ever see on the inaugural dime from any mint, and the diagonal band above also displays precise delineation. If one wishes to nitpick, the strike quality shows a faint touch of weakness on the lower diagonal, but of course, this is not a pickup point for the FB assignment. And certainly, one cannot deny that the strike was powerful enough to impart exquisite frosted texture across the entire surface. The cataloger found two trivial hairlines on the cap beneath the wing and one extremely tiny dig on the neck, but absolutely nothing else deprives the coin of its ascension into the upper echelon of grades for the date. Delicate toning and faint silver-grey patina complete the picture of a remarkable key originally preserved.
