- 1865 Pattern Indian Cent. Judd-403a, Pollock-472. Rarity-8. Proof-64+ BN (PCGS). 1869 Pattern Dime. Judd-702, Pollock-781. Rarity-5. Proof-62 (PCGS). CAC. OGH. 3.3 grams. Obverse and reverse dies used to strike regular issue 1865 Indian cents of the Plain 5 variety. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
Mostly tan overall with delicate blue, rose and jade accents. Hints of faded mint red can be seen at the obverse rim. Sharply struck in all areas. The frosty motifs contrast beautifully with mirrored fields. The editors of the most recent Judd reference (10th edition) estimate the surviving population of this variety to be just two or three pieces. From an old time collection, off the market since at least the early 1940s when it was purchased by a relative of our consignor for $75.00. The coin dealer's typed notation on the accompanying paper envelops reads:

1865 Pattern small cent. In pure copper, on thick planchet and with milled edge. Unlisted and the best of our knowledge, unique.

A truly lovely example of this extremely rare variety.
