Beautiful About Uncirculated Kwangtung Fantasy Dollar (t) CHINA. Kwangtung. Fantasy Silver Tael, ND (ca. 1907). NGC AU-55. K-F925; KMX-M60 (Obv)/M30 (Rev); WS-1349-42. A very elusive Fantasy issue, with this being our first offering of this design since 2011 and with us being able to locate no more recent an offering than 2016. Given the EXTREME RARITY, this piece is certain to capture much attention before even mentioning the beautiful condition. Nicely preserved, and delivering robust luster that compliments handsome toning that radiates outward from the peripheries. Circulation and evidence of handling is limited, and not obtrusive to the attractivity of the specimen. A piece that is worthy of much adulation, and one for which we expect much competitive bidding for. The circumstances around this fantasy coin and that which it is imitating (Kann-925) are shrouded in much numismatic mystery. While NGC has ascribed this piece to Kwangtung Province, on account of the stylistic similarities to other Fantasy Taels, there is reason to doubt this. The original this fantasy is styled upon has been variously called a Korean issue, Trial Strike, or Pattern based upon the Kwan-Ping Tael system (which was Kann's interpretation). What is clear is that this original was almost certainly produced in Britain, with the dies and concept drawings for the issue surviving in London. The fantasy issues such as this one were doubtlessly produced to complete sets devoid of the extremely rare originals. Estimate: $5,000 - $8,000. Click here for certification details from NGC.
