FROM THE M & S PETTY COLLECTION Ex Sterling-Legend, as noted on the insert. The third FINEST KNOWN and a gorgeous near-GEM that was once a part of the greatest of Seated dollar collections--the LEGEND COLLECTION! Since 1858's entire mintage was Proof only, no circulation strike silver dollars had been coined since 1857, and in 1859 the mintage jumped to 256,500, produced by four different die pairs. Most of these again were exported to China, struck in competition with the Mexican 8 Reales that was dominating trade in the Orient. The vast majority of these were melted in Asia, lost to posterity. Mint State coins are rare, and at this lofty state of preservation, they are excessively rare. This is a fabulous, essentially GEM quality Liberty Seated dollar. A brilliant cartwheel luster rolls boldly across the surfaces on both the obverse and reverse. The underlying brilliance enlivens the totally original toning. Shades of warm teal and apricot-rose meld with accents of clear gold and antique pewter-silver. The originality and eye appeal are simply stunning. The devices are sharply rendered from an exacting blow from the dies. There are some minor contact marks, mostly limited to the reverse, and they have minimal impact on the outstanding GEM-like visual allure. Ex Sterling Collection; Legend Numismatics, by sale' Legend Collection; Malibu Collection, Bowers & Merena, November 2010, lot 2267; our consignor. PCGS 7, NGC 15, CAC 6. This is the ONLY MS64+ graded by either service. PCGS has graded a 65, 66, and 66+. It should be noted that most of the great, old time collections lacked a Mint State example of the date, using instead a Proof to represent this date in high grade. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $22,500 and none of the finer examples have sold in auction, but would bring six figures each were they to ever appear. This remarkable coin offers the collector a stupendous opportunity not to be missed. Good luck. Cert. Number 25596541 PCGS # 6946
