A desirable Choice AU example with overall bright honey-gold color and pale apricot tinting. It is sharply defined across all elements with nearly full, softly frosted luster. 1854 represents the first year of eagle production at the San Francisco Mint, where a sizable quantity of 123,826 coins was struck. As a result, the 1854-S remains relatively available overall in today's market. However, uncirculated examples are incredibly rare, as the vast majority of this mintage was subject to extensive circulation through the American West. A more realistic goal for many collectors, therefore would be to focus on the Choice AU grade level. Such pieces are scarce in their own right, however, and always see spirited bidding when they appear at auction.
