- GREAT BRITAIN. Anglo-Gallic. Aquitaine. Hardi d'argent, ND (1362-72). Poiters Mint. Edward the Black Prince. PCGS AU-55.
Dup-1126; Elias-205b. Obverse: Half-length figure of Edward standing facing beneath Gothic canopy, holding sword in right hand and raising left in benediction; Reverse: Long cross pattee; lis in first and fourth angle, leopard in second and third. An interesting Anglo-Gallic piece, this coin is from the reign of Edward the Black Prince who died before he could take the English throne. This example retains hints of luster and is well struck and centered.
The son of Edward III, the Black Prince, so named for his armor, would never inherit the throne. Nevertheless, he was a decorated and venerated knight, and his name has become synonymous with chivalry. A capable military leader, Edward undertook military expeditions on behalf of England and his journeys often led him to the European continent. No coinage was struck in England under his name, though in France a number of issues were produced during his lifetime.
Estimate: $150 - $300.
Provenance: From the Runze Collection.
Ex: Davisson's 18 (11/2002) Lot # 240.
