- (1800) Washington Skull and Crossbones Funeral Medal. Baker-165A. Rarity-8. Silver. VF-35 (PCGS). 128.09 grains. Medium steel-gray with lilac-gray overtones. Holed at 12 o'clock as virtually always seen. At first glance, three old diagonal scratches below the bust almost seem like a part of the design. Other than these obvious marks, a viewer will be hard-pressed to find other blemishes of note. The famous and rare issue with a skull and crossbones motif at the bottom of the reverse, an issue that is scarce enough that the demand for an example may never be filled by all who desire one -- please keep this in mind when you formulate your bidding strategy. The sharpness throughout is choice and the eye appeal is substantial. Struck for a Masonic funerary procession in Boston and featuring Washington's portrait, these medals are always in demand. One of just two examples of Baker-165A certified by PCGS, the other a VG-10 specimen. Far more rare than its counterpart from a similar obverse die and the reverse that features a funeral urn. The last we offered was in our Americana Sale of January 2012, lot:6213, a decent Fine grade which brought well over $7,000. We suspect we will experience a hearty onslaught of bids before this beauty goes home to an advanced cabinet of Washingtoniana or "colonial" issues.
